Ashley Deeks

Ashley Deeks is the E. James Kelly, Jr.-Class of 1965 Research Professor and the Director of the National Security Law Center at the University of Virginia Law School. Her primary research and teaching interests are international law, national security, intelligence, the laws of war, executive power, and new technologies. She serves on the State Department’s Advisory Committee on International Law and the Boards of Editors for the American Journal of International Law and the Journal of National Security Law & Policy. She is a senior fellow at UVA’s Miller Center and at Lieber Institute for Law and Land Warfare at West Point, as well as a senior contributor to Lawfare. Before joining UVA, Deeks served for ten years in the U.S. State Department’s Office of the Legal Adviser, including as the assistant legal adviser for political-military affairs and the legal adviser to U.S. Embassy Baghdad.
