The Texas National Security Review is an interdisciplinary journal that is committed to excellence, scholarly rigor and accessibility to the public and policymakers. We are peer reviewed, open access, and focused on exploring and analyzing big ideas in national and international security.

The journal was founded in 2017 with the mission of bridging the gap between academia and the world of practice and policy. We aim to publish articles that populate university syllabi, that are widely cited as foundational research and analysis of global affairs, and that are circulated and discussed by policymakers and practitioners.

We are committed to developing and publishing the best research in the study of national and international security, with the goal of supporting sound decision-making by military and civilian leaders and advancing knowledge and debate within academic circles. We are methodologically pluralistic, rigorous, and selective, and we pride ourselves on jargon-free prose and clearly-articulated relevance to important policy problems and debates.

The Texas National Security Review maintains the practices of a top scholarly journal–double-blind peer review enabled by a strong editorial board and community of reviewers–while innovating on how our articles are produced and disseminated. We strive to review and edit submissions quickly so that our contents are as timely and relevant as possible, and work with our authors to facilitate meaningful exposure to policy audiences and decision-makers outside their academic disciplines, including through our podcast. Each issue is delivered in print and electronic formats, and is available online to everyone for free.

In addition to its Scholar manuscripts, the journal also features roundtable-style debates, book roundtables, and Strategist articles written from the viewpoint of senior decision-makers. You can find out more about the submissions process for each format here.

The Texas National Security Review is funded by The University of Texas System and run by an editorial team under the oversight of UT-Austin’s Clements Center for National Security and Strauss Center for International Security and Law. The journal is published quarterly by the University of Texas Press. We work closely with authors, reviewers, and our editorial, production and communications teams to ensure that each article promotes the journal’s mission in advancing fundamental and important knowledge of critical issues in national and international security.
